We had a BMW convertible in today quite a nice specimen overall , just a shame the owner treats the mot as a scheduled service.

If he’d had it serviced within the last year he may have had warning on the condition of his rear tyres, had the police stopped him at any point he could have been facing a fine up to £2000 and six points on his licence, possibly also having to have the car issued with a prohibition notice.

Not only were they below the legal limit but both tyres were badly split on the sidewall for the full circumference of the tyre.

I had to abort the test as the tyres were in such a state they could possibly have disintegrated in the brake tester. An aborted test is charged at the full test fee, but also, even once the known repairs are carried out, the vehicle still has to have  ( and pass) a full mot test (at full fee) before a VT20 pass can be issued.

Could work out as an expensive lesson.
