Brakes, judder and imbalance

An example of excessive brake judder seen on a Toyota MR2 brought in for an MoT.  In some cases slight judder is visible at Mot time even when there is nothing noticeable in everyday driving, in this case in excess of 30 kg/f  of fluctuation also led to the front brakes being out of balance with a figure of 33% imbalance being observed, the maximum allowed is 25%.

The inner green ring of LEDS when compared to the red LEDS shows the amount of fluctuation visually, and the rapidly changing figures also indicate the range and speed of the fluctuation.

A visual check of the brake discs prior to the test in the roller brake tester didn’t reveal any noticeable defect such as pitting or scale on the surface of the discs.
